The San Antonio Spurs have driven the Oklahoma City Thunder to a decisive Game 7 in the NBA’s Western Conference finals. A commanding 118-91 win at home on Thursday, May 28, clinched this outcome.
The Thunder, who easily swept their first two playoff series, faced difficulties against San Antonio. During the regular season, the Spurs prevailed over the Thunder in four of five games, including an impressive 117-102 win on Christmas Day.
Victor Wembanyama led the charge for the Spurs on Thursday, delivering a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds in Game 6. He shot 10-for-21 from the field and 4-for-9 from beyond the arc in 28 minutes.
“We played together and passed the ball,” Wembanyama said. “We trusted the game plan as always.”
The Spurs took command in the third quarter, outscoring the Thunder 32-13. San Antonio executed a 20-0 run during this period.
“I think we need to be consistent on defense,” Wembanyama added. “I think outscoring them 20-0 is not a realistic projection…but we want to be consistent.”
Wembanyama’s defense was crucial, contributing three of San Antonio’s seven blocks.
Stephon Castle effectively contained Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder’s key player and two-time MVP. Gilgeous-Alexander struggled to score, managing only 15 points. His shooting was off, hitting just 6-of-18 from the field and missing all five three-point attempts in his 28 minutes.
“A lot of the shots I’m shooting I’ve taken plenty of times before and felt good,” Gilgeous-Alexander remarked. “They’re just not going in. It’s too late in the season to abandon my shooting style now.”
While the Thunder have the advantage of playing at home, Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledges they must do more to beat the determined Spurs.
“We are a motivated group and accept the challenge ahead,” he stated. “Anything can happen in a Game 7. It’s win or go home. Playing in your building is nice, but it doesn’t really mean anything. You have to be the better basketball team.”
The pivotal Game 7 between the Thunder and the Spurs takes place at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City on Saturday, May 30, at 8 p.m. ET. The game will be aired on NBC and available for streaming on Peacock.
