Senator Lindsey Graham and UFC CEO Dana White have criticized UFC heavyweight Josh Hokit for remarks he made about Michelle Obama. The incident occurred after Hokit’s win at the UFC Freedom 250 event, held at the White House.
During his post-fight interview, Hokit repeated baseless claims about the former first lady. After his victory over Derrick Lewis, Hokit thanked President Donald Trump for hosting the event. He then concluded his interview with UFC commentator Joe Rogan by stating: “Michelle Obama is a man, am I right, America?” This statement is a reiteration of an unfounded conspiracy theory that has targeted Michelle Obama for years.
Senator Graham expressed his disapproval in an interview with TMZ on Monday. He remarked that Hokit’s comments were “not good” and referred to him as an “idiot.” Graham stated, “It took away from the event. It was meant to celebrate America’s founding and reflect the spirit of sportsmanship. That was not in the spirit of sports.” When asked about his reaction to Hokit’s comments, Graham simply said, “The guy was an idiot.”
UFC CEO Dana White also criticized Hokit’s remarks, sharing his thoughts with Time magazine via text. White stated, “I understand that the Obamas are public figures, but I’m completely against saying nasty and false things about people’s families. Everyone knows my stance on free speech, but I hate that kind of nonsense.”
