The U.S. Park Police has released CCTV images and video from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as part of an ongoing investigation into the destruction of government property. They are seeking public assistance to identify a person seen near the water.
The agency circulated stills and footage from June 19, showing an individual kneeling by the pool and reaching into the water around 3:30 p.m. While the person is not labeled as a suspect, authorities are eager to identify them in relation to the investigation. Those with information can contact the United States Park Police Tip Line via email at [email protected] or by calling (202) 379-4877.
The inquiry comes after increased security at the site, sparked by President Donald Trump’s claims that the pool had been damaged by vandalism.
Trump Says Pool Was ‘Gruesomely Vandalized’
On Wednesday, Trump referred to the Reflecting Pool as being “gruesomely vandalized,” citing damage such as cuts to the pool’s lining and chemical use. He mentioned visiting the site and claimed it appeared “perfect” afterward. According to Trump, those involved had largely been caught and are undergoing prosecution.
Despite the release of images and videos by authorities as part of the active investigation, the footage does not illustrate the type of damage Trump described. Officials have not provided evidence supporting his specific claims about the extent or cause of the damage.
Vandalism Claims Follow Pool Problems
The appeal adds a layer to an ongoing controversy concerning the Reflecting Pool, which reopened after a rapid renovation prompted by Trump earlier this year. He had requested the pool be resurfaced in “American flag blue,” expounding that the landmark was dirty and overlooked.
By early June, the project was showcased as finished, but problems emerged quickly. The water became green due to algae blooms, and sections of the blue coating appeared to peel away from the basin floor.
Administration officials have linked these problems to alleged vandalism. However, the timing has raised questions, as visible issues surfaced soon after the pool’s reopening.
Experts previously informed Newsweek that the pool’s issues, including algae growth and coating failure, could arise from factors like residual algae, water conditions, surface temperature, trapped moisture, adhesion issues, chemical treatments, and environmental stress.
Increased security procedures are observable around the landmark, with parts of the pool now fenced and a more noticeable law enforcement presence, including U.S. Park Police patrols. The Interior Department told Newsweek that the barriers were planned in anticipation of Independence Day celebrations but were installed earlier to prevent further damage.
This situation is developing and will have updates.
