Candice Davis experienced a seemingly smooth first pregnancy, with her checkups consistently clear until June 14, 2025, when nausea and upper abdominal pain struck. Initially hesitant, Davis eventually heeded the advice of her friend, Dr. Susan Passarella, and sought medical care at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Florida.
Once admitted, Davis’ condition worsened. Her blood pressure and liver enzymes rose sharply. Testing revealed she was experiencing HELLP syndrome, a rare and severe condition related to preeclampsia. While preeclampsia affects around 5% to 8% of pregnancies, HELLP syndrome occurs in only 0.01% to 0.06% of cases, according to Dr. Passarella.
Doctors decided to perform a cesarean section. Davis had hoped to deliver naturally, but the severity of her symptoms dictated otherwise. Upon delivery, the situation escalated when it became evident Davis’ liver was bleeding extensively.
The medical team, having anticipated potential complications, worked swiftly. Despite their efforts, Davis’ bleeding continued uncontrollably. The doctors packed her body with sterile materials, stabilizing her for the moment. As Davis lay unconscious, her husband and Dr. Passarella waited in trepidation.
After 24 hours, doctors successfully managed to halt the bleeding. Davis regained consciousness gradually. Two days post-surgery, she formed her first memory of holding her new son, Camden, who calmed as soon as he touched her, causing her blood pressure to drop.
Challenges persisted when blood clots developed in Davis’ left hand, leading to the amputation of her thumb and parts of her other fingers. Over the following weeks, she underwent further surgeries and began intensive therapy to regain functionality.
Adjusting to these changes while caring for a newborn demanded immense strength. Davis, supported by her family, navigated this new chapter, adapting through the use of prosthetic devices and eventually resuming independent care of her son.
Reflecting on her experience, Davis hopes to raise awareness among pregnant women about being vigilant and attentive to their health. Her story underscores the importance of seeking medical advice when something feels amiss, regardless of previous uneventful pregnancies.
Through perseverance, Davis continues to thrive. Her dedication to recovering and living fully is evident as she participates in activities with her family and plans future accomplishments.
