Save Women’s Sports Demonstrators Ejected from Portland Thorns Match

6 minutes ago 0

A demonstration by ‘Save Women’s Sports’ activists at a Portland Thorns match led to a heated confrontation and eventual ejection of the demonstrators. This occurred at the Thorns’ match against the North Carolina Courage at Providence Park, Portland.

Purpose of the Demonstration

The activists entered the stadium wearing XX-XY Athletics shirts, which they initially concealed. They revealed their shirts and a banner reading ‘Save Women’s Sports’ at the start of the second half. The demonstration was aimed at supporting female-only sports.

Amy Sousa, a women’s sports activist, and commentator Brandi Kruse were among the organizers. They stated their intention was to advocate for female sports without inciting violence.

Confrontation Details

Following the banner’s reveal, confrontation with other fans erupted. The demonstrators were allegedly assaulted with flags and subjected to verbal abuse.

Security escorted around 20 demonstrators out of the venue. According to Sousa, the group faced physical aggression, including being hit with flagpoles and drinks thrown at them.

We were attacked by fans. We were hit with flags. We had drinks thrown at us, Sousa reported.

Security and Fan Reactions

Sousa and others filed police reports post-ejection. Kruse mentioned being forcefully removed, insisting she did not voluntarily leave. Security measures led to minimal consequences for alleged aggressors.

Fans supporting transgender inclusion were described as having responded with chants and abuse. Some used flags to block the banner. No visible action was taken against these aggressors.

OutKick reporter Matt Calkins attempted coverage of the incident but faced verbal and physical harassment.

Previous Incidents

This was not the first removal of XX-XY supporters from a Thorns game. Earlier in September, a smaller group was ejected during another attempt to demonstrate.

The National Women’s Soccer League does not have a policy that automatically excludes male-born players. The upcoming ballots in Washington and Colorado could potentially change this, applying restrictions based on biological sex.

Statements from Organizers

The demonstrators, including detransitioned individual Ari Laureano, reiterated their focus on non-violence. Laureano emphasized their aim to protect women’s sports while facing harsh opposition.

The organizers expressed surprise at the event’s escalation. Brandi Kruse contrasted her actions with the aggressive reactions encountered, highlighting a desire to demonstrate peacefully.

Further comments from the Thorns or security officials were not immediately available. The issue reflects broader debates over sports inclusion policies.
