The Trump administration has successfully secured the release of Marine veteran Robert Gilman from a Russian prison, achieving this without a prisoner swap. This development marks a significant moment in U.S. hostage diplomacy.

Visuals surfaced on Wednesday showing Gilman back in the U.S. following his release from detention in Russia. Arrested on January 17, 2022, in Voronezh, Russia, Gilman had been sentenced to 10 years in prison but was freed on humanitarian grounds after spending 1,666 days in custody. President Donald Trump announced that Gilman would arrive at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., expressing Gilman’s simple request for a cheeseburger.

Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to the president, confirmed Gilman’s safe arrival on American soil via a post on social media, highlighting the importance of keeping promises. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Gorka personally welcomed Gilman upon his return, confirming his request for cheeseburgers and milkshakes.

The release was a collaborative effort, with Witkoff and Gorka meeting Gilman upon his arrival. Gorka indicated he had provided a symbolic cigar for Gilman to enjoy once he fully recovers.
