Rex the Tortoise’s Unlikely Adventure and Community Response

Rex, a giant sulcata tortoise, made headlines in Scottsdale, Arizona. Brian and Sara Westfall took him in as they searched for his owner. His resemblance to a dinosaur led to his name, Rex. One evening, neighbors were stunned to see him strolling down the street. This unexpected sight prompted questions about his journey and well-being.

Rex’s walk sparked efforts to locate his owners and highlighted the complexities of owning a sulcata tortoise. Despite their popularity in the pet trade, caring for them presents challenges. They’ve even been the punchline of a Saturday Night Live sketch.

The Appeal and Challenges of Sulcata Tortoises

Sulcata tortoises, when they hatch, are the size of golf balls. Dan Marchand, founder of Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary, noted their cuteness tempts many to adopt them without realizing the long-term responsibilities. These tortoises grow to become one of the largest tortoises in the world, weighing up to 200 pounds and living as long as 150 years.

The U.S. banned their importation in the early 2000s, but breeding is still legal. They require spacious outdoor enclosures, clean water, and warm shelter during winter. Their size and strength can become overwhelming, sometimes leading to accidental destruction.

Marchand emphasized the need for understanding before adopting, citing the tortoises’ potential impact on the environment they inhabit. His sanctuary houses approximately 700 sulcatas, some found wandering, others abandoned.

“They’re not destructive by nature, but they’re just so big, they don’t realize how strong they are,” said Marchand.

Rex’s Neighborhood Adventure

Sara Westfall’s daughter first spotted Rex. While eating dinner, her daughter exclaimed, “Daddy, a tortoise!” Initially thinking it was a decoration, the family ventured outside to find Rex, a real tortoise, walking along.

A neighbor brought lettuce, and soon the neighborhood was buzzing with activity. Social media posts attempted to locate his owners, while Rex enjoyed his temporary home. Westfall arranged hay and a shallow pool, providing care for the giant guest.

Rex’s Journey Home

Several days later, Rex’s owners, the Boxberger family, reached out. Frank Boxberger shared the story of how he acquired Rex from a pet store in San Diego over 15 years ago. Rex has since grown significantly, living in the backyard of their Arizona home.

Rex played roles in family events, becoming memorable for acts such as his “beer burro” role during Boxberger’s daughter’s wedding. His strength and tendency to dig became problematic, prompting the temporary rehoming which led to his escape.

Rex’s past owner decided to rehome him permanently. Though Westfall couldn’t keep Rex, Garret Beshey stepped in. A plumber involved with the home sale, Beshey had always wanted a sulcata tortoise.

Rex’s New Beginnings

Beshey set up accommodations for Rex in his backyard. He plans to rename Rex, with possibilities like “Bowser” from the Super Mario franchise. Despite some challenges in moving Rex, Beshey managed to get him into his truck and headed towards a new life.

Rex left the neighborhood, leaving behind memories and illustrating the challenges of sulcata tortoise ownership. The community’s involvement ensured Rex found a caring new home, showcasing the impact of collective efforts in resolving unexpected situations.
