Representative Nancy Mace has suggested a public execution for Lindsay Clancy. This comes after a jury in Massachusetts could not decide whether Clancy was criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children. “Her children are dead, she should be dead too,” Mace, a South Carolina Republican, expressed to TMZ. “She should get the death penalty. It should be public, it should be a public execution,” she added.
This suggestion cannot be enforced in Massachusetts. The state has not conducted an execution since 1947. Its highest court invalidated the capital punishment law in 1984. If convicted of first-degree murder, Clancy could face life imprisonment without the option of parole.
Recently, a mistrial was declared in Clancy’s murder trial. Jurors could not agree on a unanimous verdict. Clancy, aged 36, admitted to killing her children: Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months in January 2023. She pleaded not guilty. Her legal team claimed she was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis during the events and an attempted suicide. A retrial might happen, though prosecutors have yet to reveal a decision.
Mace is not the only official advocating for capital punishment in this instance. Representative Clay Fuller of Georgia commented after the mistrial, stating that an individual who “brutally murders” three children “deserves the death penalty.” Fuller also called for tighter federal rules on the insanity defense.
