Remembering Charlie Kirk: A Journey of Relentless Determination

In 2017, I first met Charlie Kirk in a hotel lobby in Los Angeles. I had reached out to him about collaborating, having heard about his energetic efforts to bring conservative ideas back to college campuses. Initially hesitant, Charlie finally agreed to meet after facing some negative press. Standing at 6’5″, he had a commanding presence that made him seem even taller.

Charlie possessed an admirable ability to focus sharply on the person he was talking to, while simultaneously being aware of his surroundings. This multitasking skill was impressive and something I would appreciate over the years. He was also pragmatic, never lingering on small talk. Our discussion quickly moved to the core topics, and his Midwest-influenced sense of style was evident through his oversized suit and outdated dress shoes.

A mere 23-year-old at the time, Charlie stood out in the world of politics for his authenticity. He preferred substance over style and was clearly committed to doing the hard work necessary for change. By the end of our meeting, we aligned our goals, forming a partnership that grew over the next eight years. Charlie was decisive — once he made up his mind, he took action.

In 2019, Charlie and I launched “The Charlie Kirk Show”. Initially planned as a weekly podcast, it quickly expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming a daily and sometimes multi-episode series. Eventually, it went national, gaining popularity on radio and television.

Charlie has been described as a “high-agency” individual, a compliment highlighting his exceptional ability to see projects through to completion. His ambitions were clear from the start. At 18, he founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA) with no funds or connections, driven by a vision to engage young people in conservative politics.

A significant part of his legacy includes enduring great hardships to realize his dreams. He often thrived against seemingly insurmountable odds, relying on friends’ generosity for accommodation and living off modest speaking fees.

TPUSA was built without Charlie drawing a salary for the first five years. He wore many hats, spearheading the organization’s operations while spending most of the year traveling. By contacting donors at all hours, Charlie ensured he could pay his staff, attributing this to divine providence.

Charlie’s taxing lifestyle eventually took a toll on his health, leading to severe back issues. Despite medical advice to rest, he continued working, delivering speeches through significant discomfort. Throughout his journey, he faced relentless criticism. Some dismissed his efforts as hollow, while others held him accountable for political losses unrelated to his direct actions.

Nonetheless, Charlie’s resilience only strengthened his resolve. When Turning Point Action developed “Chase the Vote”, it helped make Arizona a top-performing swing state. He engaged directly with college students to clarify misconceptions about conservatism, significantly impacting their political views.

Charlie’s critics underestimated his work ethic and vision. He was methodically constructing a system to counteract decades of different political tides. He remained a positive force, committed to his beliefs and America’s potential.

On this solemn anniversary of Charlie’s passing, we remember his unyielding spirit. He constantly battled challenges, garnering respect and admiration. His resolve serves as a reminder to persist, never to give up on our personal battles.
