Red Sox’s Trevor Story Awaits Return as Shortstop Amid Trade Deadline Drama

The Boston Red Sox were transparent about their pursuit of a shortstop during the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. Trevor Story, one of the team’s highest-paid players and a shortstop, watched the process closely. He expressed relief when the team didn’t secure another shortstop, knowing he would have the opportunity to reclaim that position.

Story remarked, “There was speculation, for sure. I saw it. But that’s the business side of the game. I can’t really control that, especially when I’m not playing. It unfolded how it did. The Red Sox were linked with Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez, Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams, and Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz. However, they could not finalize deals with any. The team then shifted focus to acquiring now-former Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman.

This leaves a gap at shortstop, compounded by Story’s prolonged absence due to sports hernia surgery. In the meantime, the team has depended on players like Andruw Monasterio, Nick Sogard, and Tsung Che-Cheng.

Story is likely to regain the everyday shortstop role upon his return. His leadership, dependable defense, and offensive potential support this expectation. He hinted at a possible comeback, mentioning the onset of a rehab assignment on the horizon. “We’re re-assessing at the end of the week, how everything went, then what it looks like going forward,” Story said. “I’m getting to a point where we’re touching close to top speed. Now, it’s about how my body responds.”

Red Sox management will welcome having Story back but will expect performance akin to his achievements in 2025 rather than 2024 or 2023. To secure his position, Story knows he must meet these standards through his performance.
