Economic Concerns

Carly, who grew up in Puerto Rico, worries about economic turmoil. She fears increased taxes and low wages, similar to concerns seen in Hawaii. Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory since 1898, and there is ongoing debate about its potential statehood.

Another resident, Alejandra, stated, “Everything would become more expensive than it already is and locals have already been struggling for a while now.”

Political Opinions

Governor Jenniffer González Colón supports statehood for equality in federal programs. However, some residents are wary of the political landscape. Boo, a Puerto Rican resident, said she’s hesitant due to the controversy surrounding current U.S. politics.

Referendum Insights

In a nonbinding 2024 referendum, 59% of voters favored statehood, while 29% supported independence and 12% preferred associated independence. Angelie believes in Puerto Rico’s potential for independence and recalls a history of colonial promises unfulfilled.

Luis, another resident, supports independence but doubts readiness due to dependence on federal funds. He mentioned, “People are used to getting the federal funds. So, that’s a shame.”

Cultural Identity

Residents like Boo fear loss of cultural identity. She stated, “Puerto Rico is already being very Americanized… it will lose the heart and soul.”
