President Trump Targets Immigrant Truck Drivers, Proposes Veterans as Replacements

3 weeks ago 0

President Donald Trump announced a new initiative aimed at replacing unauthorized immigrant truck drivers with military veterans. The plan, presented during a military investment summit in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, emphasizes giving veterans commercial driver’s licenses.

Trump stated that veterans who have driven heavy trucks for the military will automatically qualify for commercial licenses. Details on how this initiative will be implemented were not provided.

The administration is also working to reduce immigrant commercial licenses, impacting both unauthorized immigrants and legal residents. In March, 200,000 immigrant drivers lost their licenses, raising concerns about the proposal’s fairness.

An executive order from April 2025 required an English language test for commercial licenses and a review of foreign nationals’ licenses authorized to work in the U.S.

The president cited truck accidents caused by immigrant drivers, claiming without evidence that many cannot read road signs and drug abuse is widespread among them. However, to obtain a commercial license, all drivers must complete necessary training and pass required tests.
