President Trump Signs Executive Order to Reduce Dependency on Chinese Minerals

On July 20, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at stopping U.S. defense contractors from purchasing critical minerals from China. This decision is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the security of essential supply chains.

The Pentagon’s efforts focus on enhancing production capabilities within America’s defense-related industries. Allowing China control over materials vital to military operations is deemed unacceptable.

Revising supply chain practices aligns with the administration’s economic growth strategy, emphasizing domestic manufacturing over imports from unreliable sources. This approach benefits the U.S. labor force and national security.

Partnerships are encouraged, particularly with G7 allies and other close partners, provided production occurs on U.S. soil. A notable example is the agreement between U.S. ReconCraft and Ukrainian Uforce to manufacture drone boats in Portland, Oregon. This marks the first U.S. production of drone boats, supporting the Pentagon’s aim to expand its autonomous weapons capacity.

Recent proof-of-concept tests involved U.S. drone boats targeting an Iranian submarine facility, confirming their efficacy. The collaboration will include sharing warfighting doctrine, with Ukraine’s expertise based on experience battling Russian forces. These applications are crucial worldwide, especially in Middle Eastern conflicts requiring advanced drone technology.

Efforts also extend to semiconductor supply chains, critical for drone production. Last December, Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn introduced the Chip EQUIP Act, addressing vulnerabilities in semiconductor supply chains. This act seeks to prevent U.S. companies receiving CHIPS funding from purchasing technology from China and other adversarial nations.

Blackburn emphasizes securing semiconductor supply chains by preventing reliance on manufacturing tools from adversarial countries. Notably, the Wacker Polysilicon Plant, producing essential semiconductor components, is located in Tennessee.

The Trump administration’s proactive measures in securing vital supply chains demonstrate commitment to national security. Congressional support for bipartisan legislative initiatives and related trade actions remains crucial.
