There were a bunch of friends that were dragged by the current in the top of Nevada’s fall today. The girl was saved but another person with her went with the current to the fall.
The NPS released a statement after reports surfaced on social media, detailing a harrowing scene where witnesses watched a rescue effort unfold. The victim fell while attempting to save a woman near the waterfall.
The witness recounted that a branch was passed to the girl, aiding her rescue. However, the other person could not secure themselves and followed the current to the fall. This eyewitness account describes the profound distress following the rescue and the emotional reaction of the victim’s friends.
That was horrifying to see… I was literally shaking for about 1 hour… and it was so sad to see the girl rescued and her friends crying the whole time.
A helicopter arrived approximately one hour post-incident to search the area. Rescue hikers followed with necessary equipment to assist in the efforts.
Nevada Fall is notorious for its steep descent, slippery surface, and potent water flow, posing significant risks to visitors. The 600-foot descent is a challenge, and previous visitors have attested to the area’s dangers.
You just don’t realize how slippery that granite can be and how strong the current is.
Another commenter emphasized that surviving a fall from such a height would be unlikely, even with safety gear like life jackets or helmets.
The incident has prompted discussions about the risks during peak months when water levels are high and crowds are present. Concerns have been raised over visitors engaging in risky behavior on the slippery rocks.
The ongoing investigation by the National Park Service aims to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
