Gary Residents Finally See Power Restoration

After over two weeks of power outages due to violent storms, nearly all of Gary, Indiana saw the return of power and air conditioning by Wednesday. This update comes after storms on August 11 left thousands without electricity. As of Wednesday afternoon, only around 250 utility customers remained without power in the city populated by 69,000 residents. The Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) reported this progress on their website.

Extent of Damage from Derecho and Tornadoes

The storm on August 11 included a derecho that swept through Indiana and parts of the Midwest with winds ranging from 70 to over 100 mph. The National Weather Service described this storm as capable of producing tornado-level winds. This event led to the worst damage NIPSCO has ever experienced, causing power loss for 80% of its customers, approximately 375,000 in total. Beyond the derecho, tornadoes contributed to the destruction, including a 26-mile EF2 tornado starting in Illinois and moving into Indiana.

Community Response to Restoration Delays

Residents expressed frustration with the slow pace of power restoration. Gary Mayor Eric Melton labeled the delay as unacceptable. Some locals resorted to sleeping in running cars to escape the heat, while reports emerged of stolen generators in affected neighborhoods. Residents with health conditions faced added challenges, relying on inhalers due to power outages preventing normal medical device use.

Governor’s Criticism and Disaster Declaration

Governor Mike Braun criticized NIPSCO’s response and demanded an investigation into their handling of the situation. Braun highlighted the expectation that utility companies should rapidly restore services following severe weather. A major disaster declaration approved by President Donald Trump was announced, enabling additional aid for affected areas.

Community Support in Recovery Efforts

NIPSCO President Vince Parisi thanked customers for their patience during restoration. He recognized the severity of the damage and assured efforts would focus on supporting communities still affected. Amid reports of seven storm-related fatalities across Indiana, including counties like Lake, Delaware, and others, recovery efforts continue. Persistent heavy rain caused additional flooding in areas like Noblesville, adding to the challenges faced by residents.
