Pete Alonso attempted an unexpected play against the Detroit Tigers, but it didn’t go as planned. During the opening game of a doubleheader, Dillon Dingler of the Tigers sent a ball toward Alonso, who was playing first base for the Baltimore Orioles. A routine out was anticipated in the fourth inning.
With a runner on first, Alonso decided to drop the ball instead of catching it, aiming to get both players out. This strategy failed. Alonso misjudged the bounce and his throw to second base didn’t succeed. Both runners were safe, leading to an error attributed to Alonso.
The Orioles didn’t fall behind permanently, though. Despite Alonso’s error contributing to two Detroit runs in that inning, Baltimore rebounded with a 5-3 victory.
This wasn’t the only challenge for Alonso, who also had a rough day at the plate, going hitless in four attempts. So far this season, he’s managed 10 home runs and 32 RBIs, despite a .224 batting average.
Alonso recently secured a five-year deal with the Orioles valued at $155 million, earning him an average of $31 million annually.
