Residents in St. Petersburg were advised to remain indoors following a significant Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s second-largest city, signaling Kyiv’s increased capability to strike deep within Russian territory. This incident followed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to meet with Ukraine’s president. According to St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov, three individuals suffered minor injuries due to the attack. Additionally, he warned residents of potential mobile internet disruptions, while regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that 141 drones were intercepted in the Leningrad region, labeling it as an ‘unprecedented attack’.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated its air defenses successfully shot down 376 Ukrainian drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared on X that Ukrainian drones covered approximately 1,000 kilometers to reach the St. Petersburg region, targeting enemy naval arsenals and a base in Kronstadt. He also noted drone hits on an oil depot in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region.
The attack on St. Petersburg represents another challenge to Putin’s portrayal of the conflict as a distant event. Prior to the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum – a showcase for investment led by Putin – a Ukrainian drone strike ignited an oil terminal and affected a nearby naval base. In his speech at the forum, Putin declared plans to bolster air defenses against Ukrainian drone incursions. Despite these disruptions, Putin dismissed Zelenskyy’s invitation for a direct dialogue, suggesting the meeting as pointless.
Zelenskyy’s letter, the first direct public communication to Putin since the onset of Russian military actions in Ukraine, criticized Putin’s 26-year leadership while referencing his age. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha countered Putin’s dismissal by predicting worsening conditions for Russia, asserting that no location in Russia is truly ‘safe’ from Ukraine’s long-range capabilities.
Conflicts persist along the front line as both nations execute long-range attacks seeking strategic advantages. In Ukraine, Russian forces inflicted casualties in the Dnipropetrovsk region, with one fatality and three injured. Separately, a fire in a parking area in Zaporizhzhia, triggered by a Russian drone strike, resulted in seven seeking medical attention. On the attack front, Russia employed 272 strike drones overnight, with Ukrainian air defenses downing 249 of them, as updated by the Ukrainian air force.
