The Pentagon has awarded Raytheon a substantial contract worth $6.3 billion for the production of Standard Missile-3 Block IB (SM-3 Blk IB) interceptors. This decision emphasizes the importance of enhancing the capabilities of U.S. military forces.
Michael P. Duffey, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, highlighted that these interceptors ensure superiority for U.S. forces globally. According to him, the contract ensures consistent production and addresses challenges in the defense manufacturing process. This move ensures that U.S. fleets and combat commands have the necessary interceptors for air, sea, and land battles.
SM-3 missiles play a critical role in defending against short- and medium-range ballistic missiles. They are especially vital for U.S. Navy destroyers, which have used them in conflicts, such as against Iranian ballistic missiles. The SM-3 B variant, first launched in 2014, boasts improvements like a two-color infrared seeker and upgraded propulsion.
The Pentagon stated that the contract spans five years with options to extend it by two more. This structure aims to reduce supply chain issues and direct resources to essential areas like assembly lines and suppliers of solid-rocket motors.
