Fire Alarm Disruption at Northwestern University Play

10 minutes ago 0

Theatergoers attended a play at Cahn Auditorium, Northwestern University, recounting testimonies from those affected by the 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel. During the play, a fire alarm interrupted the event. Many attendees thought the alarms were part of the performance, given the play’s theme of sirens and warnings.

Ann McElhinney, co-author of the play “OCTOBER 7” with Phelim McAleer, told Fox News Digital that the alarms initially seemed like an integrated element of the play to the audience. Once they realized the alarms were genuine, the theater was evacuated. McElhinney mentioned that some audience members left out of fear, while others stayed, determined not to be intimidated.

After authorities deemed the building safe, the performance continued. McAleer noted that the play ended with a standing ovation, a gesture both for the production team and those who returned despite the alarm.

Northwestern University confirmed the evacuation occurred at 8:12 p.m., and authorities investigated the incident. The play resumed and finished by 9:45 p.m. An investigation by Northwestern University Police Department is ongoing.

McAleer and McElhinney mentioned the absence of protesters outside the venue at the start. They suggested that someone inside might have pulled the alarm deliberately during a crucial emotional moment.

The play presents firsthand accounts gathered in Israel, detailing the impact of Hamas attacks. McElhinney and McAleer felt an obligation to tell these stories, as media attention tended to focus on other aspects of the conflict.

The play “OCTOBER 7” has been performed across several locations, including New York City and the Kennedy Center. The production often required security, highlighted by its run in New York City which included a daily police presence.

The incident at Northwestern is seen as indicative of the current state of free speech and security on college campuses in the U.S., particularly for Jewish students and events commemorating their history.

McAleer shared concerns about the need for extensive security on campuses, stating it reflects on the lack of free speech and free thought. The couple plans to file a police report in hopes of holding the responsible party accountable.
