NASCAR events often bring excitement, and the race at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado was no exception. The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series took place here, providing spectators with plenty of action.
During the race, a significant incident occurred on a restart. Sam Mayer was involved in a severe collision, leading to a red flag to clear the track and inspect barriers.
While waiting, Sheldon Creed, driver of the No. 00 Haas Factory Team car, had an unusual encounter. A fan climbed multiple fences to reach Creed, engaged him in brief conversation, and then returned to the stands—all while wearing flip-flops.
Creed remarked that he suspected the fan was not sober, which is understandable given the circumstances. It was a surprising and reckless act, unlikely to be welcomed at future events.
This incident isn’t without precedent. In 2007 at Watkins Glen, N.Y., a fan similarly crossed the track during a red flag for an autograph from Matt Kenseth.
Such actions are unsafe and discouraged. Fans should refrain from using red flags as opportunities for personal interactions with drivers.
