As excitement for the World Cup reaches its peak in Mexico City, an unexpected star has emerged among fans. Osito, an 8-year-old rescue poodle mix, is gaining attention, not as a player or coach, but as a fan favorite. He arrived at Mexico’s opening match dressed in a jersey, sunglasses, and a cap, riding perched on the back of a cargo bicycle.
When thousands of fans moved toward the stadium, many took a moment to photograph and pet Osito. Videos of the dog soon spread across social media, making him one of the World Cup’s charming viral sensations. His presence expanded into international broadcasts, capturing hearts worldwide.
For Osito’s owner, Jorge Rangel, the attention is about the bond he shares with the dog. Rangel, who delivers household products across Mexico City, travels everywhere with Osito. “More than a dog, he’s my daily companion,” Rangel, 50, explained.
On their travels, Osito sits calmly in a back compartment of a custom cargo bicycle, greeting passersby. What began as a chance ride in a delivery box became a daily routine, with Rangel adjusting the setup for longer city trips. Now, children rush to meet Osito, and some initially mistake him for a toy because of his stillness.
He has a very gentle temperament. Everybody wants to meet him,Rangel said.
As the World Cup commenced, Rangel, a soccer fan himself, prepared for weeks, assembling accessories and sunglasses for Osito. He aimed to stand out amidst the stadium crowd by decking Osito in a national team jersey and decorating the bicycle.
Rangel described the response as surpassing his hopes. Fans resonate with not the costumes or fame, but the visible connection between Rangel and Osito. Adopted during a challenging period in Rangel’s life, Osito became his emotional support. “I didn’t know what it meant to love an animal until Osito came into my life,” Rangel expressed.
Nearly every day is spent together by the inseparable duo, with Osito protesting with barks if Rangel leaves without him. Their close relationship often brightens the days of those who encounter them.
As the World Cup continues, videos of Osito keep circulating, and the demand for photos grows. Each day, Rangel and Osito continue their routine, riding through Mexico City, spreading joy and smiles. According to Rangel, the most gratifying part of their story is showcasing the affection between a man and his dog, which has become one of the memorable images of the World Cup.
