Meriwether Lewis Elementary School in Portland, Oregon, became the focal point of a lawsuit between a local mother, Allison Roberts, and the school district. Roberts challenged the district’s gender curriculum, leading to legal action.
In August, Roberts filed a lawsuit against Portland Public Schools, driven by her concerns over changes at her child’s school. The school had transformed its traditional rainbow pride flag into an “Intersex-Inclusive Progress” flag, integrating elements supporting racial inclusion and transgender rights.
Roberts also discovered that her 11-year-old’s class had been given an “identity flower” assignment. This task prompted students to explore and discuss their gender identity with peers and teachers. Feeling dissatisfied with the school’s response to her concerns, Roberts wrote an open letter criticizing their policies, which she distributed near school premises.
Following these actions, the school district accused Roberts of harassment and issued a one-year trespass order. This barred her from attending school events, including her child’s graduation.
Represented by the Liberty Justice Center, Roberts challenged the district in court. As a result, Portland Public Schools agreed to several concessions. These included lifting the campus ban on Roberts, exempting her children from specific LGBTQ2SIA+ curriculum requirements, and revising their nondiscrimination and anti-harassment policies.
Portland Public Schools confirmed the rescindment of the trespass notice in a statement to Fox News Digital, asserting their adherence to laws protecting children.
Timothy Snowball, an attorney for the Liberty Justice Center, referred to the settlement as a “victory.” He emphasized the unconstitutionality of the school’s actions was addressed through dialogue with a federal judge.
Another hearing is scheduled to assess district policies, particularly those allowing teachers to withhold information from parents. Snowball declared this case as a significant victory not only for Roberts but for all parents seeking involvement in their children’s education.
Roberts shared her appreciation for the support received locally and nationally. She expressed a commitment to fighting for the rights of American families.
