An off-duty U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent suffered a gunshot wound and subsequent arrest following an alleged attack on a 72-year-old man in California, as reported by police. The incident occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m. on a Friday near East Dudley and North Broadway Street in Fresno, responding officers indicated.
Upon arrival, officers found a man with a gunshot wound to his midsection in handcuffs. Identified as David Gonzalez, 32, from Texas, he served as an off-duty federal agent with ICE. This incident surfaced amid rising scrutiny over the U.S. government’s immigration enforcement, particularly after another ICE-related shooting in New York City that led to protests.
Off-Duty Agent Was Intoxicated
Reports from police said a woman discovered Gonzalez asleep on her front lawn and alerted her 72-year-old father. When approached, Gonzalez, appearing intoxicated and agitated, allegedly attacked the man. Visible injuries were purportedly inflicted during the altercation.
The situation escalated when Gonzalez allegedly assaulted the man’s daughter as she attempted to intervene. This prompted the father to fear for their safety and use his legally possessed firearm, discharging a single shot that hit Gonzalez.
Soon after, the daughter’s boyfriend, an off-duty police officer, arrived and detained Gonzalez until authorities took over. Gonzalez received medical treatment while under investigation for felony assault charges.
No Charges for 72-Year-Old
No criminal charges were pressed against the 72-year-old man. Investigation findings recognized his legal possession of the weapon used in the incident. The motive behind Gonzalez’s presence in the area remains unclear, though his off-duty and solitary status at that time was verified.
Inquiries were made to the Fresno Police Department, Department of Homeland Security, and ICE for further commentary, yet responses remained pending. Fresno Police highlighted no existing confrontation between their officers and ICE personnel and confirmed ICE’s initiation of a personnel investigation.
Law enforcement continues its investigation, advising potential witnesses or individuals with video evidence to reach out to the Fresno Police Department at 559-621-7000 or CrimeStoppers at 498-STOP for further assistance.
