Novak Djokovic’s Health Challenges Amid Cincinnati Open Loss

Novak Djokovic, a prominent figure in the tennis world, hinted at a health condition after his early exit from the Cincinnati Open on Saturday. Djokovic, at 39 years old, lost to 25-year-old Thiago Agustín Tirante in the second round. Throughout the match, Djokovic appeared to struggle significantly, even taking a medical timeout after a bout of vomiting. The match extended nearly three hours before Tirante emerged victorious over the 24-time Grand Slam winner.

Speaking to reporters post-match, Djokovic described it as “not an enjoyable” experience. “It’s just a condition that I have, health-wise, that has been bothering me for the past couple of years,” he revealed. He noted that he faces numerous issues, particularly in hot and humid conditions. While aware of the humidity, Djokovic mentioned that additional factors, such as nerves, exacerbate the situation. However, he did not specify or explain the exact health problem.

Despite the loss, Djokovic extended his congratulations to Tirante. Tirante considered the victory potentially the best of his career, showcasing respect by calling Djokovic one of the sport’s most significant figures. “I think I really did a good job inside the court,” Tirante said. He commended himself for managing the nerves that come with playing against someone legendary like Djokovic.

Throughout the match, Djokovic faced 15 break points and saved 13 of them. However, Tirante managed to break Djokovic’s serve in the ninth game of the final set, eventually sealing the match with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over 2 hours and 44 minutes.

Djokovic has had substantial success at the Cincinnati Open in the past, but the recent loss brought his record at this tournament to 45-13, according to ATP Tour data. Djokovic pondered his future participation, saying, “I certainly hope so, but it looks more likely not, unfortunately. But let’s see what the future brings.”

The Cincinnati Open marked Djokovic’s first tournament since his Wimbledon defeat to Italy’s Jannik Sinner in July. He withdrew from the Canadian Open earlier this month, likely conserving energy for the U.S. Open, which is the year’s final Grand Slam event starting on August 30. Djokovic has claimed the U.S. Open title four times.
