North Carolina Immigration Debate Intensifies After Child Fatality

The tragic death of a six-year-old girl has thrust a North Carolina congressional district into a heated national debate on immigration. The incident occurred in a 25-county district, more than 2,000 miles from the Mexican border, following a car crash caused by a repeatedly deported man.

This district, known primarily for its economic struggles, has traditionally focused on poverty-related issues. However, the recent event involving Calli Toler has shifted attention. Her death came after Jaime Santiago Corona, a Mexican national, allegedly ran a stop sign near Vanceboro, just beyond the district’s boundary.

“Illegal immigration is an issue that’s deeply felt here … when you see incidents like fentanyl trafficking and arrests of individuals previously deported,” said Laurie Buckhout of Edenton. She is challenging incumbent Democratic Rep. Don Davis in this slightly Republican-leaning district.

Buckhout criticized the Biden administration’s immigration policies, claiming that lax enforcement has allowed such tragedies to happen. In contrast, Rep. Davis expressed his commitment to enforcing federal immigration laws, aiming to ensure safety for North Carolinians.

The suspect, Corona, had been deported three times before returning illegally. He holds a record of DUI offenses. Authorities in Pitt County, where Corona was detained, plan to cooperate with immigration enforcement.

“Under Trump’s ‘America First’ approach, we’ve seen some positive changes. But we need more—better funding, technology at the border, and support for our agents,” Buckhout emphasized.

She mentioned other local cases involving illegal immigrants, adding to the district’s rising concerns. Buckhout also highlighted the need for economic revitalization, emphasizing support for agricultural and fishing industries, vital to NC-1’s economy.

A spokesperson for Davis countered, asserting that his focus on local resources, such as reopening a hospital in Martin County, underscores his commitment to the people of Eastern North Carolina. Both candidates are expected to face a competitive race.
