The New York gubernatorial race intensified as Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman confronted each other in a debate. The pair exchanged sharp remarks about various topics, including President Donald Trump, a recent incident involving ICE, and inflation.
Debate on ICE’s Actions
The debate began with questions about the conduct of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Last week, a shooting incident involving ICE occurred in New York City. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the victim, a 28-year-old Dominican national, had refused to comply with lawful orders during a targeted operation in the Bronx. A five-year-old boy inside the vehicle was unharmed.
Blakeman criticized Hochul, claiming she appealed to ICE to release the criminal. He questioned why such individuals were in New York, suggesting that Hochul’s policies turned New York into a sanctuary state. He emphasized his cooperative agreement with ICE that led to the removal of over 2,000 individuals with criminal records from his county.
“If you cooperate with federal law enforcement, it leads to a safer community,” Blakeman asserted, accusing Hochul of taking away this ability.
Hochul responded by condemning the actions of ICE and calling Blakeman’s response a “non-answer.” She criticized Blakeman for not addressing the shooting incident’s dangers, claiming it reflected an out-of-control agency.
Immigration Policies Dispute
Blakeman accused Hochul of inviting criminals into the state with her policies. He stated, “We didn’t have any incidents in my county because cooperation with law enforcement was allowed. Hochul’s policies led to chaos.” Hochul rebutted by stating, “New York is not a sanctuary for criminals. Full stop.”
Economic Issues and Trump
During the debate, Hochul and Blakeman also clashed over the economy and former President Trump. Hochul blamed Trump for rising energy and grocery costs, expressing dismay at Blakeman’s admiration for Trump. Hochul argued that high tariffs raised prices and caused suffering in the state.
Blakeman, defending Trump, accused Hochul of a record filled with high taxes and utility rates well above the national average. He emphasized endorsements from both Republicans and Democrats, including Debra Messing, a liberal Democrat.
The heated exchange highlighted the stark contrasts between the candidates as they vie for the governor’s seat in the upcoming election.
