If you plan to get a passport soon, you might want to wait a bit unless your travel plans demand it. In a recent announcement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed President Trump’s new artificial intelligence website will enable Americans to apply for passports online. This development aims to simplify the process by offering digital access.
During the event, Rubio also introduced a new passport design. “It’s an expression of the unbreakable bond between the nation and the citizen,” he stated. This bond transcends physical borders. A consistent theme throughout the new passports is the eagle. It remains on the cover and now features on the book’s pages.
The pages will showcase designs depicting “250 years of America,” said Rubio. These include imagery from the Battle of Lexington, westward expansion, the flight of the Wright brothers, Marines raising the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima, and the Artemis mission’s April splashdown. Changes to the cover involve enlarging the U.S. seal and repositioning “United States of America” to the top.
Rubio mentioned, “I can see Americans at airports worldwide, curious about the new designs.” These interactive elements provide a distraction for travelers.
While the online application process is expected next year, the redesigned passports won’t be available until 2028. Earlier this year, the State Department introduced a limited-edition “Patriot Passport” featuring Trump’s likeness for the semiquincentennial. Initially, these passports were only available at the District of Columbia passport office but expanded to more offices nationwide in July.
