New Mexico’s Universal Child Care Faces Overwhelming Demand

2 weeks ago 0

New Mexico embarked on a pioneering journey to provide universal free child care a year ago. However, challenges have emerged as demand outstrips availability, and costs continue to rise.

At the First Presbyterian Child Development Center in Santa Fe, children are under the care of diligent staff. Despite the initiative’s promise, families like Dakota Rivera’s are struggling to find available slots for their children.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, declared in September of the previous year that New Mexico would broaden its day care assistance program. This expansion aimed to include every family desiring to participate in the program.

The vision was clear: offer free child care to alleviate financial burdens on families. However, the reality has been challenging. The project’s ambition to support all families has encountered obstacles due to significant demand and escalating costs.
