The Nobel Peace Prize for 2026 has been awarded to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African-born former judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Pillay, who is 85, served as the United Nations human rights chief and continues to work with the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The Nobel Committee recognized Pillay for her tireless efforts in promoting peace and upholding international law.
Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, stated that this award serves as a message to those attempting to undermine international law. The ICC, where Pillay was a judge from 2003 to 2008, has faced challenges, particularly from the United States under the Trump administration. The U.S. imposed sanctions on the ICC after it issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which President Trump opposed.
Pillay’s tenure as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights involved chairing the U.N. Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Last year, this commission concluded that Israel’s actions in Gaza amounted to genocide. Israel criticized the report as “scandalous.” Currently, Pillay serves as an ad hoc judge for the ICJ, working on the Gambia v. Myanmar case that involves accusations of genocide against Myanmar’s military junta.
Upon learning of her award, Pillay appeared in a video with Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard. She humorously suggested sharing the prize with Trump, eliciting laughter from onlookers. Initially believing the news to be a joke, Pillay emphasized the impartiality and factual basis necessary in legal decisions.
Last year, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts in achieving democratic transition. Her recognition followed the U.S. ousting Venezuela’s then-President Nicolás Maduro. Though Machado symbolically gave her medal to President Trump, the Nobel Committee stated that the award itself cannot be transferred.
Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize can be submitted by a select group, including heads of state, university professors, past laureates, and Nobel Committee members. The prize money for this year is 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1.2 million.
The Nobel Prize series also honored other laureates this year. The medicine prize recognized three scientists for creating a tool that uses light to explore brain function. The physics award acknowledged a scientist’s discoveries about neutrinos. The chemistry prize was given for work on molecular mirror images, aiding drug development. Anne Carson won the literature prize for her innovative literary works.
Historically, the United States has the most Nobel Peace Prizes, with 24 awards. Noteworthy past laureates include Malala Yousafzai, the youngest recipient at age 17 in 2014, and President Barack Obama in 2009. The prize has not been awarded 19 times, mostly during world wars, and has a controversial history, including a withdrawn 1939 nomination for Adolf Hitler.
