Mountaineer Nirmal Purja and Climbers Killed in Pakistan Avalanche

Renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja was among ten climbers confirmed dead on Saturday during an expedition on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-tallest mountain situated in Pakistan. The tragic incident occurred when the climbers were struck by an avalanche on the 26,414-foot peak within the Karakoram mountain range.

The world has lost one of mountaineering’s greatest climbers, stated Elite Exped, the organization involved in the expedition. We mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy.

Purja, known for his remarkable climbing abilities, was leading the expedition. The Pakistani rescue team retrieved three bodies, including that of American Sarah Mallory Geis, on Friday. However, adverse weather conditions in the challenging area temporarily paused the recovery operation.

The search resumed on Saturday as rescuers continued efforts to recover the remaining seven bodies. Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, expressed his deep sorrow at the loss. The loss of these courageous climbers, who came from different nations united by their passion for the mountains, is an immeasurable loss to the global mountaineering fraternity, he remarked.

Despite the beauty of the mountains, Khan highlighted the significant risks faced by those who venture into the Himalaya and Karakoram regions. He extended gratitude to the military, Sherpas, and civilians involved in the rescue mission.

Alongside Purja, the deceased included climbers from Pakistan, Nepal, and China. Purja was a British-Nepali mountaineer and had gained fame through the 2021 Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, chronicling his attempt to climb the world’s 14 tallest mountains within seven months.

The British Defense Minister, Wes Streeting, paid tribute to Purja, describing him as an inspirational man who served in our Armed Forces for many years—whose incredible mountaineering adventures are known the world over. Purja, 43, had served with the Gurkhas and later in the British special forces.
