MLB Issues Warning Over Uniform Writing

1 week ago 0

Major League Baseball recently reminded players of its rules regarding uniform modifications after several San Francisco pitchers added Bible verses to their Pride Night caps. During the game against the Chicago Cubs, starting pitcher Landen Roupp wore a cap that featured the verse ‘Gen 9:12-16.’ This verse partially covered the rainbow SF logo, designated for the Pride Night event.

Relievers JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker also included Bible verses on their caps, while pitcher Sam Hentges chose to wear the standard team cap, avoiding the Pride Night version entirely.

A statement from MLB clarified that while the writing on caps isn’t disciplinary, it’s a breach of uniform regulations. These regulations prohibit players from displaying any form of personal messages or nicknames on uniforms or equipment. MLB emphasized that this warning does not pertain to the content of any messages, but rather to adherence to uniform policies.

The league has issued similar warnings for messages with content like ‘Dad’ or ‘Happy Mother’s Day.’ While players have the right to free expression, MLB’s uniform policies are specific and they have reiterated them on numerous occasions.

MLB teams often hold Pride Nights during the season, especially as it coincides with Pride Month in June. These events support LGBTQ+ fans. Initiatives include rainbow-themed patches, special ballpark signage, and appearances by community figures and performers.

Roupp, addressing the press, affirmed his belief in the cited Genesis verse, highlighting the rainbow as a sign of God’s covenant. He expressed gratitude for living in a country where individuals have the freedom to hold and express personal beliefs.

Giants manager Tony Vitello mentioned that no prior discussion occurred with the pitchers about their cap messages. He noted it was generally understood that players can act according to their beliefs.
