During a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump stated, “We’ll give them the right to make Patriots. We’ll show them how to do it.” The process of establishing a manufacturing facility might take several years. Ukraine might need these defenses sooner due to persistent Russian air assaults.
For weeks, Zelensky warned that Ukraine was depleting its stock of Patriot interceptors. These interceptors are crucial and are among the most reliable systems provided by Western allies to counter Russian ballistic missiles. The defense system is mobile and includes advanced radar, a control van, and missile launchers. These components collectively intercept ballistic missiles before they impact.
The impact of the interceptor shortage became evident when, earlier this week, Ukraine’s Air Force could not intercept any of the 23 ballistic missiles launched by Russia overnight. Recent Russian attacks have resulted in over 50 fatalities this week alone. Ukraine has urged its Western partners for more interceptors. However, their production is lengthy, and global supplies are limited due to numerous conflicts worldwide.
