Mitchell & Michaels Plat Du Jour, launched in January 2026 in downtown Homewood, is updating its menu in response to customer feedback from its first six months. The restaurant is adding new options and introducing weekend brunch hours.
“We’ve worked out some things,” said owner Chris Michaels, who runs the business with his wife, Stacey. “We’re ready to let this thing take off.”
Initially focused on Southern soul food, Chris Michaels aims to incorporate traditional American dishes to encourage regular visits. He noted a shift in understanding the community’s preferences, leading to the inclusion of requested items like burgers, pastas, and paninis. The menu now features roughly 25 additional items.
“It was just making it more robust for, not necessarily special occasion dining, but everyday dining, along with those special occasions,”Michaels stated.
The restaurant operates from Wednesday to Sunday, remaining closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Post relaunch, a regular menu will be available during the week, while a special soul food menu will highlight the weekends.
“We wanted to kind of specialize our weekends because they’re obviously our big days, like most restaurants,” Michaels noted.
The new menu debuts with a grand re-opening at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Michaels expressed confidence in the timing, stating they are on track with their planned adjustments.
“We’re where we want to be now, given the fact that we had to learn some things about what would be best for our establishment and our customers,” Michaels shared.
Mitchell & Michaels Plat Du Jour is located on Dixie Highway in downtown Homewood, close to the Homewood Public Library. Starting the weekend of the 25th, the restaurant will offer brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, transitioning to soul food afterward.
“The brunch is very important. We’ve had a lot of requests for that from the time that we actually opened up,” Michaels explained.
In addition to regular dining, the establishment features live entertainment weekly and is available for event rentals. Michaels’ background in broadcasting initially drew him to the restaurant industry for its entertainment aspects.
Since opening at 18031 Dixie Highway, Homewood has been supportive, according to Michaels, who has ties to the Southland area since his high school years at Thornwood High School in South Holland.
“Homewood has been great,” Michaels said. “They’ve been super supportive of everything that we’ve done thus far.”
Michaels and Stacey Michaels initially considered a smaller location but were pleasantly surprised by the business’s success.
“It became something a lot more than we anticipated, but we’re very happy with that,” Michaels admitted. “I think we were dreaming a little too small.”
