Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell will not vote on the Senate floor this week. He is recovering after an unpublicized hospitalization, as announced by his office on Monday.
The 84-year-old Republican was hospitalized on Sunday, June 14, 2026. Specifics about his medical condition or hospitalization reason remain private, though his staff assures that he is receiving “excellent care.”
The Senate will proceed with crucial budget matters. McConnell’s office highlights that his voting terminal will be inactive for the week but assures that his legislative staff is executing his directives for federal business and Kentucky initiatives.
“Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week,” stated his office.
Despite earlier optimism from senior Republican leadership, McConnell’s absence is extended. Last week, Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed confidence that McConnell remained involved and sounded well. Fellow Kentucky Senator Rand Paul mentioned that McConnell appeared to be recovering, though he had not spoken with him directly.
McConnell’s medical leave adds to health challenges he faced as a childhood polio survivor. In February, he was hospitalized for “flu-like symptoms.” Public events have shown physical strain, like a bandaged hand in May. Past incidents include a major hospitalization in 2023 for a concussion and fractured rib, and brief freezing episodes during press events.
His recovery occurs during a significant period for the experienced statesman. McConnell, Senate Republican leader from 2007 until 2025, previously announced his tenure will conclude when his seventh term ends in January 2027.
