Metcalf Family Seeks Accountability After Sentencing of Karmelo Anthony

Austin Metcalf’s father expressed disappointment over the lack of communication from Karmelo Anthony’s family concerning the tragic loss of his son. Anthony, aged 19, received a 35-year prison sentence earlier this month following his conviction for murder in the fatal stabbing of Metcalf at a track meet in Frisco, Texas, when both were teens.

The case garnered national attention, mainly due to social media narratives that portrayed the incident through a racial lens. With Anthony being Black and Metcalf white, the absence of Black jurors, despite some being people of color, added to the complexity of the discussions surrounding the verdict.

Post-trial, there have been suggestions that racial dynamics and the trial’s venue influenced the verdict. Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett expressed the view that the outcome could have been different if Anthony was white.

In an interview on The Will Cain Show on Fox News, Jeff Metcalf urged against racial politicization of his son’s death. “The two things I said in one of the first interviews I ever did was ‘Please don’t make this about race, please don’t politicize it,’” he stated, criticizing those who chose to do so.

He noted the absence of dialogue with Anthony’s family. “I was actually hoping to show them, I know what happened was terrible. And your son made a horrible mistake. I was hoping for some accountability maybe and some remorse. Neither one was shown,” he told host Cain.

“No,” Metcalf replied.

No apology, no remorse? Cain then inquired.

“Nothing,” Metcalf affirmed.

He further shared that members of Anthony’s family and other supporters departed the courtroom after the verdict, missing the sentencing and victim impact statements. He commented, “They weren’t there for the sentencing and they were not there for victim impact statements. They left that poor child up there by himself.”
