Mbappe Shines in World Cup Opener Against Senegal

1 week ago 0

The opening 45 minutes were challenging for France, but they found their stride in the second half against Senegal during the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday. Kylian Mbappe, the current Golden Boot holder, began his World Cup campaign in the 66th minute. Michael Olise set up a perfect through ball that Mbappe swiftly converted into a goal. Later, in stoppage time, Mbappe sealed France’s 3-1 victory with a powerful shot from outside the box.

With this second goal, Mbappe has achieved several milestones. ESPN Insights reports that he has now surpassed Olivier Giroud as the leading scorer for the French national team with 58 goals. Additionally, The Athletic notes that Mbappe became the first player to achieve five two-goal matches at the World Cup. On the all-time men’s World Cup scorers list, Mbappe, with 14 goals, has overtaken Just Fontaine (13) and Lionel Messi (13). He is positioned to surpass Miroslav Klose (16) and Ronaldo (15) by the conclusion of the tournament.

Although Messi later matched Mbappe’s goal count in Argentina’s opener against Algeria, it’s truly remarkable that Mbappe has accumulated 14 goals in just three World Cups compared to Messi’s six. While discussions about overall World Cup performance involve more than goal tallies, Mbappe’s record speaks volumes about his potential legacy in the tournament.

Despite Mbappe and Messi each having one World Cup title, Mbappe’s impactful debut in 2018 helped secure France’s first World Cup since 1998. However, in the 2022 final, Argentina triumphed over France in a penalty shootout, although Mbappe scored a hat trick whereas Messi had two goals.

This World Cup could significantly influence how Mbappe is perceived among football greats, a fact he acknowledges. “At the end of the day, you need to feel this pressure to do something special,” Mbappe shared with FOX’s Jenny Taft. “It’s my objective, it’s my goal, when I wear this jersey to put my country at the top of the world.”
