Matthew Stafford’s recent performances continue to build on his remarkable legacy in the NFL. After earning his first NFL MVP award in 2025, he achieved a unique milestone on Sunday night during the Los Angeles Rams’ game against the Denver Broncos in Week 3 of “Sunday Night Football.”
According to ESPN Insights, Stafford became the first player to throw for 20,000 yards with multiple teams. During his time with the Detroit Lions, he amassed 45,109 passing yards and has now achieved 20,000 passing yards with the Los Angeles Rams.
At age 38, Stafford also set an unfortunate record in the game. He threw a pick-six during the fourth quarter, adding to his total of 33 pick-sixes in his career, the highest for any NFL quarterback, surpassing Brett Favre’s previous record of 32.
Prior to the season, Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed his belief in Stafford’s improvement with age. Stafford acknowledged his reliance on surrounding talent to compensate for his lack of mobility, emphasizing the importance of having skilled receivers.
“For me to play really well, everybody around me has to play really well. I’m not Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen, who can make incredible, creative plays with their legs,” Stafford explained. “I’m blessed to have good players and a head coach that puts us in a great position to succeed. Playing with confidence and trust in the team is pivotal.”
As Stafford pursues a second Super Bowl title with the Rams this season, his achievements may not surpass his passing yard total with the Lions. However, additional accolades could be on the horizon.
