A suicide bomber attacked a passenger train in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, Pakistan, on Sunday morning. The Associated Press (AP) reports that at least 23 people died and around 70 others sustained injuries.
The attack occurred when a vehicle filled with explosives detonated near a railway line as the train passed. This caused two train cars to overturn and ignite. The region is known for ongoing insurgency activities involving separatist and militant groups.
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a militant group fighting for the province’s independence from Pakistan, claimed responsibility. The Times of India stated the train was carrying army personnel and their families traveling for the Eid holidays from Quetta to Peshawar. The AP reported the BLA claimed to target a train with security personnel. The area is heavily guarded, which highlights the severity of the attack.

Witnesses and photos circulating online show the explosion caused two train cars to overturn and catch fire, with thick smoke billowing into the sky. According to AP, nearby buildings and more than a dozen parked vehicles suffered extensive damage. Many victims were quickly transported to local hospitals, with about 20 reported in critical condition.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack. He referred to it as a “cowardly act of terrorism,” vowing justice for those involved. He stated, “Such cowardly acts of terrorism cannot weaken the resolve of the people of Pakistan. We remain steadfast in our determination to eliminate terrorism.” He offered condolences to the victims’ families and support to Balochistan.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti accused Indian-sponsored proxies of supporting the perpetrators, aiming to destabilize Pakistan. Bugti’s comments reflect the tense relations over territorial claims in Kashmir, although India denies such involvement. Bugti stated, “The terrorists of Fitna Al-Hindustan are proving their savagery by targeting innocent civilians, women, and children.”
The BLA has conducted major suicide attacks against Pakistani forces in Quetta before. The Times of India reported a 2024 bombing at a Balochistan train station killed at least 26 people, including soldiers.
