Mackenzie Shirilla, a convicted murderer, now works as a food service worker at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. This role was confirmed by Ohio prison officials. Due to public-records exemptions, officials have not shared more details about her assignment.
Shirilla’s case has drawn attention again following a Netflix series called “The Crash.” At 21 years old, she serves two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life in prison. This follows the fatal crash on July 31, 2022, which killed her boyfriend Dominic Russo and their friend Davion Flanagan.
The events unfolded when Shirilla intentionally drove her Toyota Camry into a building in Strongsville, Ohio. Police records show the vehicle was traveling at 90 mph in a 35 mph zone at the time. No brakes were applied, and the accelerator was fully engaged before impact.
The crash occurred early in the morning at the PLIDCO building. Russo and Flanagan were pronounced dead at the scene. Shirilla was extracted from the car and taken to the hospital.
Initially classified as accidental, further investigation led to the crash being recognized as intentional. Prosecutors argued that Shirilla wanted to end her toxic relationship with Russo. Flanagan was considered an unintended victim of this act.
The release of “The Crash” on Netflix has reignited public interest in this tragic case. Shirilla’s legal team has since appealed to the Ohio Supreme Court, arguing ineffective assistance of trial counsel.
Her attorneys claim Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) may have caused her to lose consciousness before the crash. They allege that this condition was insufficiently examined during the trial.
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley remains firm in Shirilla’s guilt, supported by evidence presented in the initial trial.
