The leading candidates for mayor of Los Angeles spread out across the city over the weekend to make their final appeals to voters ahead of the upcoming primary election.
Current Mayor Karen Bass drew crowds of labor union workers on Saturday who were energized and chanting, “Four more years!” A significant number of influential local and state Democrats rallied alongside the incumbent to support her re-election.
Campaign Efforts
City Councilmember Nithya Raman spent her day visiting local restaurants and bars in a classic yellow Scout convertible. She engaged with business owners and her supporters to solidify their backing.
Spencer Pratt, formerly of reality TV fame, held a block party in Baldwin Village featuring barbecue food and American-flag lawn chairs. Despite the festive atmosphere, he took time to listen to the concerns of Black residents attending the event.
Polls and Projections
Polls indicate a close race, with Pratt and Raman within striking distance of Bass, who had maintained a comfortable lead previously. Surveys show Bass at 26%, Raman at 25%, and Pratt at 22%, with a margin of error of approximately 3%, and 10% of voters remain undecided. The election rules stipulate that the top two candidates will advance to a runoff election unless one candidate secures over 50% of the vote.
Community Engagement
During Pratt’s event, caregiver Diane Waterhouse spoke about homelessness and drug addiction. “I believe God moves mountains; I believe you can get that 51% on that Tuesday,” Waterhouse told Pratt, hoping for significant change.
Pratt interacted personally with attendees, offering his personal phone number to a bus driver, Erica Helon, who expressed frustration with the status quo.
Raman continued her grassroots approach by meeting local restaurant owners. She released a policy plan for small businesses and engaged with patrons at Lowboy Bar in Echo Park, connecting over shared visions for the city’s future.
Raman told volunteers at UCLA phone banking that their work was crucial for her campaign, which lacks the backing of traditional political machines.
Bass’ Campaign Momentum
Bass attended community events, including a Democratic party Carne Asada Tour, demonstrating her connection with diverse communities. Several supporters credited her for improvements in homelessness through programs like Inside Safe.
In a message of optimism, Bass spoke to a supportive crowd in Venice, highlighting past successes and future potential for Los Angeles under her leadership.
Pratt’s Weekend Activities
While Pratt’s Sunday schedule remained discreet, his campaign focused on smaller community engagements rather than larger media events, signaling his intent to build genuine connections with voters.
