Game 6 Scheduling and Venue Discussions

The WNBA Finals have sparked attention, not only for the intense games but also due to logistical challenges. Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries faced tense negotiations to schedule their Game 6 at State Farm Arena in downtown Atlanta on Thursday. This game is set for 12:30 p.m. ET, creating a matinee on the East Coast and a morning event on the West Coast.

An open letter from the Dream expressed dissatisfaction with venue capacity concerns being overlooked. The team highlighted efforts to address scheduling conflicts early, noting potential clashes with NBA games at the same venue.

“Our concerns did not receive the attention that they deserved,” the letter stated, urging more urgency from the WNBA.

Dream owners voiced their frustrations with the schedule, particularly the shift to an early afternoon game.

Impacts on State Farm Arena

Atlanta’s home playoff games, held at State Farm Arena, generally accommodate around 17,000 fans. The team plans to use State Farm Arena for all home games starting in 2027, moving away from Gateway Center Arena’s limited capacity of 3,500.

Hawks home games have been affected as well, delaying their matches to accommodate WNBA Finals scheduling. Adjustments are made, ensuring arena readiness for subsequent events.

Reaction and Solutions

Game 6’s weekday afternoon schedule met mixed reactions. ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne described it as “the best of the bad solutions.” Alternatives included moving the game to Friday and extending Game 7 into next week.

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert praised sellout crowds, emphasizing collaborative efforts to facilitate the Finals. Engelbert highlighted the enthusiasm for Game 6, expecting a similar vibrant atmosphere.

Despite logistical hurdles, Game 6 tickets sold out swiftly, underscoring strong fan support. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens encouraged leniency for Dream fans on Thursday afternoon.
