During the Class 4A Homewood-Flossmoor Regional championship game, Lincoln-Way West’s senior third baseman, Jackson Mansker, displayed remarkable resilience. Early in the game, he experienced a frustrating moment when a potential home run was snatched away by a remarkable catch from H-F’s junior center fielder, Marcos Morales. Despite this setback, Mansker’s response was noteworthy.
Following the missed home run opportunity, Mansker vented his frustration by hitting the bench, resulting in three bloody knuckles. “I’ve been getting wall balls all season,” Mansker explained. “I think it’s happened to me 10 times. I was just frustrated. I never really get mad that easily.” However, turning frustration into motivation proved effective.
In his next at-bat, Mansker launched a two-run homer to left field, breaking a tie and contributing significantly to Lincoln-Way West’s 6-2 victory over the host Vikings. This win secured their sixth regional title and fourth in the last five years. Carson Paulas played a crucial role as well, adding two hits and two RBIs, while Owen Chudzinski earned the win in relief by pitching three scoreless innings.
Defensively, senior catcher Owen Weber made an impressive play with the bases loaded in the fourth. He prevented a potential Viking score by catching a pitch that bounced in the dirt and firing the ball to Mansker at third base for an inning-ending pickoff. This momentum shift helped send the Warriors to a Wednesday sectional semifinal against third-seeded Sandburg.
Mansker’s change in batting stance also paid off. On the advice of assistant coach Jeff Struebing, he lifted his left heel during his swing. Although initially hesitant, Mansker found success with the adjustment. “I didn’t like doing it at first in practice,” Mansker shared. “But when I did it, it started to work.” Struebing believed a swing tweak would enhance Mansker’s natural athleticism.
Lincoln-Way West’s leadoff hitter, Carson Paulas, noted the valuable presence of Mansker in the lineup. “I know if I get on base he will send one through the hole and I’ll be running home,” Paulas said. Their on-field success reflects a strong bond that extends beyond the game, as they share a friendship off the field as well.
