Coal Mine Explosion in Pakistan Claims Multiple Lives

An explosion inside a coal mine in southwest Pakistan resulted in the death of at least 32 miners on Thursday. The incident trapped 10 more underground under life-threatening conditions.

The explosion, believed to have been caused by a buildup of methane gas, occurred near the Baluchistan provincial capital, Quetta. According to government mine inspector Ghani Baloch, the ongoing search and rescue operation aims to find and recover the remaining trapped miners.

Baloch confirmed that the bodies of seven individuals were initially retrieved, followed by the discovery of 25 more. Rescue teams continue their efforts, although the probability of survival diminishes greatly following methane gas explosions due to the lack of oxygen. Rescuers proceed cautiously in the mine.

Authorities have begun handing over the victims’ bodies to their families. Relatives of those still trapped are waiting anxiously for updates.

Shoaib Nosherwani, Baluchistan’s Minister for Mines and Minerals, conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families and announced an investigation into the explosion’s cause. The provincial government plans to provide compensation of 500,000 Pakistani rupees (about $1,800) to each deceased miner’s family.

A coal miners’ labor union attributed the explosion to suspected negligence and demanded accountability. The Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation urged the government to enforce safety regulations strictly and penalize companies violating mine safety laws.

Deadly accidents frequently occur in Pakistan’s coal mining sector, especially in Baluchistan. Most mines in the region reportedly lack essential safety measures like adequate ventilation and gas monitoring systems.

Despite low pay and risky conditions, thousands of miners rely on the coal industry for income in Baluchistan, Pakistan’s largest yet least developed province. Here, unemployment and poverty remain critical issues.
