Lemont’s Unexpected Hero: Allison Tilly’s Rise as a Goalkeeper

4 weeks ago 0

Allison Tilly, a sophomore at Lemont, showed remarkable courage and adaptability in an emergency situation that transformed into a championship-winning week for her team. Lemont faced a critical need for a goalkeeper due to multiple injuries just before a sectional match. Tilly, who usually plays as a defender and had no prior experience as a goalkeeper, volunteered to fill the gap.

Tilly shared, “I have a background in basketball, volleyball, and softball. I knew I could step up.” She emphasized her confidence and willingness to try when no one else would. After her first practice on Monday, calling the past few days intense, Tilly learned quickly and performed exceptionally.

By Friday night, during the Class 2A Providence Sectional championship game in New Lenox, Tilly proved herself. Making eight crucial saves, she lead Lemont to a 2-1 victory against the host Celtics. The Lemont goalkeeper was instrumental throughout, defending against key attempts by the opposition.

“Incredible at the end of the game,” praised coach Rick Prangen on Tilly’s efforts. “She was unreal.”

For Lemont, Illinois-Chicago recruit Gabriela Kuruc scored both goals, supplemented by Madison Weil’s assist, securing their first sectional title since 2018. Lemont’s next challenge is against Geneva at the Kankakee Supersectional, a significant opportunity for coach Prangen, who is retiring at the end of the season.

Tilly expressed, “This milestone is important. Coach Prangen’s final season deserves memorable moments.” With assistant Mark Tomczak potentially not coaching next year, Tilly and her team aim to honor their coaches.

Aubrey Curry, from top-seeded Providence, scored a tying goal but Gabriela Kuruc quickly countered with a decisive goal, helping Lemont maintain the lead.

“Training was focused and quick,” remarked Kuruc, highlighting the team’s preparation for fast-paced gameplay.

Tilly tackled numerous challenges, including significant scoring threats in the last ten minutes. “It was intense,” Tilly stated, articulating her nerves but effective handling of shots.

Coach Tomczak, responsible for training goalies, showed great appreciation for Tilly’s performance. After the final whistle, he rushed onto the field, embracing her warmly.

Reflecting, Tilly said, “This week’s smiles and pride from everyone mean much. Helping my team achieve this feels surreal.” Her transition from defender to reliable goalkeeper astonished teammates like Kuruc, who had been impressed throughout the semifinals.
