The Israeli military asserts the base is essential to prevent Jenin from reverting to a stronghold of Palestinian militants.

Since January last year, the Israeli military has controlled parts of Jenin, known for past militant activities. The military operation in January 2025 aimed to curb militant groups associated with Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. These groups had resisted the Palestinian Authority’s control and perpetrated attacks on Israelis. The operation led to a significant displacement of over 10,000 Palestinians, marking the largest in the West Bank since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Expansion Concerns

Critics express concern that the establishment of a military base on confiscated land near Jenin camp might lead to increased settlement activity, viewed as illegal by much of the global community. Kamal Abu al-Rub, governor of Jenin for the Palestinian Authority, perceives this move as a violation of existing agreements, stating, “They’re acting as if there are no agreements between us.”
