The helicopter used by LeBron James, the Philadelphia 76ers superstar, to commute between New York and Philadelphia has become a significant topic within NBA circles. As the 2026-27 NBA season approaches, Commissioner Adam Silver affirmed the Fanatics-branded helicopter and its funding structure as “perfectly appropriate.”
James participated in the Sixers’ preseason finale on Friday and addressed the speculation surrounding his travel choice between the team’s facilities and New York City. “Yeah, I’ve done it before,” he remarked, describing the helicopter as “just another way of transportation.” He emphasized, “That’s all.”
Fanatics, founded by former 76ers minority owner Michael Rubin, covers the expenses for James’ roughly 40-minute one-way trips. Reports suggest the commute costs for home games could total just under $1 million this season, relying on usage frequency. “The Athletic” estimated $328,000 for flights to and from 41 home games, excluding practice sessions and potential cancellations.
Carmelo Anthony suggests that LeBron James and the 76ers could pose challenges to other teams, including the reigning champion New York Knicks.
In 2022, Rubin chose to sell his stake to sidestep potential conflicts with his evolving business pursuits. The ownership group initially acquired the 76ers for around $290 million in 2011. As Fanatics grew into areas like sports betting, Rubin decided to sell his approximate 10% share in Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. Despite his business ventures, Rubin maintains his support as a “life-long fan” of the team.
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Silver clarified the arrangement between James and Fanatics. “He has a deal with Fanatics,” Silver stated, asserting that as long as the agreement remains exclusive to Fanatics and James, without team involvement, there are no regulatory concerns.
After joining the Sixers as a free agent, James chose to live in New York City, similar to former Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick during his tenure with the 76ers. However, James’ decision to use a helicopter for regular commutes has attracted more attention. Following a 76ers practice, teammates have even paused amid their media sessions, chuckling as the helicopter’s takeoff briefly drowns out conversations.
The 76ers are set to play against the reigning champions, the New York Knicks, at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
