Jake Woodford: A Champion Across Teams

24 minutes ago 0

Though the World Series has yet to commence, one player is poised for victory. Relief pitcher Jake Woodford is assured of champion status, having represented both the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays this season.

The Tampa Bay Rays traded Woodford, aged 29, to the Milwaukee Brewers shortly before the season’s start in March. As part of the Brewers’ bullpen, Woodford played in 16 games, earning a 1-0 record with a 6.94 ERA and one save over 23 1/3 innings pitched.

On June 5, the Brewers designated Woodford for assignment, leading to his release within the week. By July 4, he had signed with the Chicago Cubs. However, his tenure with the Cubs was brief as he featured in only one game, allowing three runs over two innings before being designated for assignment again on July 11 and released on July 16.

Despite this setback, the Cubs offered Woodford a minor league contract on July 18. His contract was selected on July 29, returning him to the major leagues. He threw a scoreless inning on August 3. Yet, the Cubs designated him for assignment once more on August 4 and released him on August 10.

Woodford was then reunited with the Rays, signing a minor league contract on August 11. Over a month later, the Rays selected his contract for the major league roster on September 24. In a game against the New York Yankees, Woodford surrendered three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. He faced another designation for assignment on September 25, leading to his release on September 29.

Throughout the 2026 season, Woodford navigated a tumultuous path across three teams. Regardless of his journey, either the Milwaukee Brewers or the Tampa Bay Rays will secure the World Series title.

The customization of rings for players lies with team ownership and management. Thus, Woodford’s receipt of a championship ring is not definitive despite his involvement with the contending teams.

The World Series is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET with the Brewers hosting the Rays.
