Las Vegas Officer and Armed Suspect Killed in Shooting Incident

A Las Vegas police officer, who was a Marine veteran, was killed on Tuesday while responding to a report of a person with a weapon. The suspect was also killed in the incident, authorities confirmed.

The event unfolded near a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue. Police received a call shortly before 4 p.m. about an individual waving a firearm and appearing intoxicated, as reported by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Officers and police drones were dispatched to the location. Officers encountered the armed suspect near Mountain Vista Street and the Interstate 11 underpass. The suspect fired at the officers, leading at least one officer to return fire.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated that a 30-year-old officer was wounded in the shootout and taken to University Medical Center. Despite efforts by the medical team, the officer was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The sheriff described the officer as a Marine veteran and acknowledged his service to the community since joining the police department in November 2023.

“A fellow officer who served both country and community has sadly passed,” said McMahill. He expressed that the department is grieving, along with the broader community.

The police have expressed condolences to the family of the fallen officer and promised ongoing support. Various law enforcement agencies also shared their sympathies.
