Keith Urban Surprises Fans with Yacht Rock Album

2 weeks ago 0

Keith Urban, known primarily for his country music, has taken an unexpected turn with his 2026 album, Flow State. This latest work includes an original track with music legend Michael McDonald and ten covers of yacht rock classics. Yacht rock, a term describing soft rock from the late ’70s to early ’80s, features songs like Player’s “Baby Come Back” and Grover Washington Jr. and Bill Withers’ “Just the Two of Us.” Even Urban himself was taken by surprise with this shift in his music style.

Recording at The Sound

The journey to Flow State began with Urban’s refurbishment of the Tracking Room studio in Nashville, which he renamed The Sound. To test out the space, he invited session musicians to play with him. During one of these sessions, Urban proposed they cover a yacht rock song, as he has always been fond of this loosely defined genre. The quality and arrangements of these songs were impressive to him. Alongside producer Dann Huff, Urban recorded two songs in one day, which sparked additional sessions leading to a full album instead of a planned EP.

The spontaneity and joy in making this album were significant for Urban. Yacht rock’s relaxed vibe matched the unpressured recording process. On this project, Urban aimed to avoid replicating the original songs perfectly while respecting their essence, opting for his interpretations instead. A prime example is their extended version of “Summer Breeze” with additions like a keyboard and acoustic guitar outro.

Collaborations and Original Track

Flow State also includes collaborations with artists like Little Big Town on Walter Egan’s “Magnet and Steel” and John Mayer on Bread’s “The Guitar Man.” The sole original track, “We Go Back,” tells a nostalgic story about a couple reuniting after years apart. Written in 2020 with BRELAND, Sam Sumser, and Sean Small, the song became a dream realized when McDonald contributed his vocals, an idea Urban had years prior during its conception.

Music as Comfort in Challenging Times

Urban describes the song choices in Flow State as comforting in today’s divisive world. He believes they continue to provide solace as they once did. The music offers listeners a joyful escape into its uplifting melodies. Following his divorce from Nicole Kidman in January, the album provided an unexpected positive turn for Urban. He views it as a collection of songs that arrived at a challenging time in his life.

In creating Flow State, Urban experienced constant movement and joy amidst the effort it took. He chose the album’s name to reflect this dynamic process. Importantly, Urban finds beauty in how a yacht rock song can bring people together through shared emotions and experiences. For three and a half minutes, it allows listeners to exhale and appreciate a moment of happiness.
