Johnnie ‘DJ’ Jones’ Recovery After Heart Transplant

17 minutes ago 0

Johnnie “DJ” Jones, a freshman playing offensive line for the Missouri Tigers, is recuperating following a heart transplant. Missouri’s head coach, Eli Drinkwitz, shared this development on Thursday. In a message shared on social media, Drinkwitz mentioned that the surgery for Jones was successful and that his recovery was progressing.

Gratitude for Medical Team and Donor
Eli Drinkwitz expressed deep gratitude towards the medical team responsible for DJ’s care. He also acknowledged the donor and the donor’s family, emphasizing the significance of their generous donation.

“We are incredibly grateful for the medical team who cared for DJ and for the donor and donor family whose extraordinary gift made this possible,” wrote Drinkwitz, who is now in his seventh year with the Tigers.

Undetected Heart Issue
Despite being a healthy athlete, Jones showed no symptoms before a routine heart screening unveiled an underlying defect. This mandatory screening during the summer flagged potential heart issues. Initially, the team did not receive any conclusive answers, leading them to seek further evaluation from the Mayo Clinic.

Diagnosis at Mayo Clinic
After being admitted to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, doctors uncovered a more severe cardiac issue. This compelled the coaching staff to acknowledge that a transplant was necessary. Jones had been in the clinic, waiting for a suitable donor.

An 18-year-old Talent
Jones completed his high school education at Venice High School located on Florida’s Gulf Coast. He joined Missouri as a highly regarded four-star recruit. Missouri heads into their sixth week of college football with a 4-1 record and is scheduled to play against Columbia on Saturday.
